8 Structured Modules
Introduction to Systematic Reviews
This session sets out what separates a systematic review from a narrative one, and where it sits among other forms of evidence synthesis.
Formulating Answerable Questions with PICO
Candidates learn to turn a clinical question into a PICO structure: population, intervention, comparison and outcome, so it can be searched.
Searching the Evidence: Strategy, Databases and the PRISMA Diagram
Candidates build a search strategy across multiple databases and learn to track study flow using a PRISMA diagram.
Screening, Selection and Managing Disagreements
This module covers screening titles and abstracts against pre-set eligibility criteria, plus how to resolve disagreement between reviewers.
Data Extraction
Candidates design a data extraction form and learn what to pull from each included study so results stay comparable.
Risk of Bias and Critical Appraisal
Candidates learn to appraise study quality using tools such as Cochrane's RoB 2, and to recognise common sources of bias.
Synthesis, Meta-Analysis and Forest Plots
This session covers combining results across studies, reading a forest plot, and judging when meta-analysis is the right approach.
Writing, Reporting and Publishing
Candidates learn how to structure a review manuscript, report findings clearly, and prepare a paper for submission and publication.

Research Experience Isn't Optional Anymore
Specialty recruitment keeps getting more competitive. In the 2025 round there were around 21.5 applicants for every Ophthalmology ST1 post, 11.3 for Clinical Radiology ST1, and 8.6 for Core Surgical Training CT1. Publications count directly in scoring frameworks too; IMT, for example, scores systematic reviews and meta-analyses as original research.
A systematic review is one of the most accessible ways to take ownership of a research project. You don't need a lab or an existing dataset, just curiosity and a structured process to follow. Pub2 teaches that process end to end across eight expert-led modules, with no prior research experience needed and no requirement to be interested in ophthalmology specifically.
How Pub2 Works
Learn
Work through all eight modules at your own pace: watch the lecture, read the summary, and pass the knowledge check before moving on.
Apply
Practise the same searching, screening, extraction and appraisal skills you'd use on a real review, checked module by module as you go.
Publish-Ready
Finish the series with a genuine, practical grounding you can take into your own systematic review, from question to submission.
Why Pub2
Why Go Through Pub2
Eight Modules, Start to Finish
Pub2 runs eight structured sessions covering the full pipeline, from the evidence hierarchy and PICO through searching, screening, data extraction, risk of bias, synthesis and writing for publication. Every lecture streams live on Zoom and is recorded, so missing a live date never means falling behind.
Learn, Then Prove It
Each module pairs its lecture with a written summary and a graded knowledge check, set at an 80% pass mark. You're not just watching along; you're demonstrating, module by module, that the material has actually landed before moving on to the next one.
Free for This Pilot Round
This first cohort runs the complete eight-module series at no cost to you. There's no fee to join, no fee to sit the knowledge checks, and no charge anywhere across the pilot round. The only ask is that you show up and do the work.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Pub2?
A: Pub2 is Eye Academy's e-learning programme for learning how to conduct a systematic review. It's a self-paced series of 8 online modules covering the full process, from formulating a question through to writing up and publishing, each with a recorded lecture, a written summary, and a graded knowledge check.
Q: Will I be matched with a research team or supervisor?
A: Not in this round. Pub2 is currently an 8-module lecture series with a graded knowledge check for each module. There's no research-team placement or supervisor matching at this stage.
Q: What does each module include?
A: A recorded video lecture, a written summary of the key points, and a graded knowledge check with an 80% pass mark. Some modules also include supplementary reading.
Q: What happens if I miss a live lecture?
A: All 8 sessions run live on Zoom, and all 8 are recorded. If a live date clashes with something, you watch the recording afterward, so missing one live session doesn't cut you off from that content.
Q: Who teaches the modules?
A: All 8 modules have a confirmed speaker for the 2026 series. The full list, with each speaker's background, is above in the Faculty section.
Q: Is there a cost?
A: No. This pilot round of Pub2 is completely free.
